The Labor Day holiday weekend is a great time to take advantage of Tampa Florida attractions. Tampa Bay is full of opportunities for FUN! Don’t succumb to the ever present home improvement list and spend that long weekend breaking a sweat inside. Line up some great things to do, places to go and restaurants to try instead.
Officially, Labor Day is the first Monday in September. Unofficially, many people make it a Labor Day weekend instead by tacking on an extra day off or 2. Here are a few great ideas on how to spend your hard earned time off in our slice of the West Coast of Florida.
Go to a Game – Baseball!
The Tampa Bay Rays are playing against the Orioles on Sunday afternoon, September 2, and the Rangers on Monday. Both are home games played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL. You can get MLB Tickets from about $25 each, making the cost of a game for a family of 4 about the price of 1 ticket to Mickey Mouse world.
Go to a Concert – Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival
September 3rd at 2:30, Labor Day weekend, the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival launches at the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheater. This is a high energy event with multiple big names including:
Avenged Sevenfold , Three Days Grace, Seether, Bullet for my Valentine, Escape the Fate and Sevendust.

See a Show – La Nouba
When was the last time you were amazed? There are a few good reasons to brave the traffic on I-4 and head over to Orlando and La Nouba is at the top of that list. If you’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil show and have your everyday circus in mind, set all that aside. La Nouba is a show that you can bring your family to, children small and large, and you’re jaw will actually drop. The shows run Tuesday through Saturday at 6PM and 9PM. Family Picnic – Lettuce Lake Park
Lettuce Lake is a great spot to stage that family reunion or just haul the kids over for some fun and the sun. 6920 E Fletcher Avenue, Tampa FL 33637. The best things about this particular park:
- Wide open spaces – Plenty of room for the traditional labor day flag football game, tackle Frisbee or Jart dodging. They have picnic structures and many spots to set up the barbecue.
- Boardwalk – this park’s most unique feature is the 3500’ of boardwalk that winds through the woods and over the Hillsborough River. You can expect to see gators, turtles and a great selection of Florida birdlife. The kids will love it!
- Museum – there’s a education center at the beginning of the boardwalk that’s often the destination of local schools. It won’t take long to go through and really keeps the kids attention.
Gulfport Art Walk
This regular event happens on the first Friday of every month starting at 6PM, but Labor Day presents a good excuse to attend. Gulfport is a classic Florida waterfront town with a Key West vibe and has a high concentration of talented artists. In fact, if you just take a quick walk down the pier or grab dinner at O’Maddys you can often spot them capturing the sunset on canvas. During Artwalk, they bring their wares out onto the sidewalk for sale and for browsing. Gulfport is a great little town to visit anyway, full of charming shops, and dozens of cool little restaurants serving some of the best food in Tampa Bay.
Beach!
You already know that Tampa Bay has the Best Beaches in Florida, why not try one on Saturday that you haven’t been to?
Clearwater Beach is not only a great place for sun and fun, but Clearwater Beach restaurants are among the best in the bay for seafood and casual atmosphere. Kick back, have lunch and people watch the afternoon away.
Siesta Key is a little bit of a drive from Tampa/St. Pete, but well worth it. Beautiful sand, sailboats on the horizon and a good mix of things to do close by make it a good place to spend a Saturday with the family.
Fort Desoto Park is a local staple. Always in the Top 10 beach lists, you get a great combination of public park and beach combined. Walk out into the beautiful blue water, hit the pathways through the woods or just set up that picnic lunch. This is a jewel of Tampa Bay attractions.
